Head of Ad Operations and Programmatic Yield

Los Angeles, California, United States Full-time

One of the key members of our team is the Senior Director (or VP depending on experience) of Ad Ops and Programmatic Yield. The mission of this role is to wring every possible cent out of our ad inventory, while balancing user experience. We have built some cutting-edge internal platforms tied into DFP, Facebook and other APIs to support and scale 3rd party monetization, and are seeking an individual looking to grow his or her knowledge base and “own” these systems. Technically the role is more “Yield” than “Ad Ops”, but you will need to manage the ad ops team. You will have a couple of experienced direct reports as well as a lateral reporting relationship with our direct sales team, and will work directly with the CEO, CTO, and head of revenue. This is a hands-on position combining both tactics and strategy. If you aren’t a metrics-driven thinker looking for a new challenge, this isn’t the role for you.

The Ranker Story:

Ranker is a data-driven media company whose unique hook is Editors Create, Users Participate. In March, Ranker had over 80 million US visits - and more minutes spent on site than Complex, Bustle, Refinery 29, Mic, and Mashable combined (comScore), with 50 million worldwide unique visitors. Visitor engagement is the center of Ranker, which collects over 12 million monthly votes across thousands of pop culture lists including extremely competitive search terms like “best movies of all time” (which has over 2.2MM votes alone).  This has built a treasure trove of psychographic "people who like X also like Y" first party data that can leveraged for the benefit of advertisers.  The company is based in LA, has 72 employees, is venture-backed and profitable.

  • Oversee our demand stack across all devices and ad types (display, native, video, data)
  • Support our direct and programmatic sales teams

  • Own (in conjunction with tech/product) the ad footprint on multiple page types on mobile and desktop
  • Work with finance team to ensure proper client billing
  • Assist in testing and vetting new demand, data and technology partner opportunities
  • Oversee ad trafficking and ad operations in general
  • Help source, integrate and test new ad product offerings
  • Oversee the “connected loop” between monetization and traffic acquisition
  • Liase with product team and engineers to continue to improve internal platforms

  • BA/BS degree, MS/MBA a plus
  • 4+ years industry experience
  • Trading experience and advanced understanding of SSPs, DSPs, DMPs, PMPs, 3rd party data, pixel technologies and ad servers

  • Deep problem solver
  • Deep proficiency with DFP (or similar level ad server) a must; experience with Omniture a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation and communication skills
  • Exceptional work ethic; you don’t stop until it’s done
  • Experience at startups or startup-type environments; although Ranker has 70+ employees the company is growing fast and things change on a dime. You must be able to thrive in an environment where nothing can “take a few months”.
  • Comfort with ad code (SQL experience a big plus)
  • Familiarity with marketing or selling and doing business development around “deal ID” programmatic inventory a plus
