Special Projects Editor

Los Angeles, California, United States Full-time

We are currently looking for an experienced editor with deep knowledge of movies, television, and other unique pop culture verticals to join our team. The position will focus on leveraging the Ranker format, social reach, and new distribution avenues to develop a distinct and compelling editorial voice. We are looking for a candidate who can bring a deep knowledge and passion for this space and can embrace social and data optimized publishing.

The Ranker Story:
Ranker is a new type of publisher, one focused on entertaining content across all genres with a unique crowdsourced element. Our editors publish lists and rankings of just about every topic… from The Best TV Dramas to The Greatest Super Bowl Matchups to The Best Albums of the ‘90s. Our readers then vote and re-rank the lists based on their opinions.

Founded in 2009, the company has made a number of breakthroughs in the last 18 months, which has led to explosive growth. Ranker now reaches close to 50MM users worldwide. In fact, per ComScore, Ranker had higher time on site than major publishers such as Wikia.com/Fandom, Time, Business Insider and Forbes as of July 2017. Ranker’s business is primarily premium programmatic, we are now profitable, and are backed by world-class VCs including Lowercase and Draper.

Why work for Ranker?
First, what’s in it for you:

  • Competitive compensation package.
  • Enhance your leadership skills at the management level of a fast-paced, growing media organization.
  • Not deeply familiar with Ranker? Despite its huge audience, Ranker has flown a bit under the radar compared to its peers; we’ve built a real business without just burning through venture capital. You can be a crucial part of changing perceptions and building a more recognized media brand.
  • Great perks (weekly lunches, well-stocked kitchen, free snacks and drinks, free monthly massages, etc.) that aren’t so over the top we’re a parody of ourselves.
  • Competitive benefits, including fully-paid medical.
  • Flexible startup culture with room for growth and opportunities to learn new aspects of online publishing.
  • Most importantly, we are on the bleeding edge of scalable, data-driven distribution via social and SEO. The internet has changed drastically just in the last 3-4 years, and you will be immersed in tactics and analysis circa today, not 2014.

What is expected of you?

  • Firm understanding of how to assign, select, and shape a clickable, compelling story.
  • Ability to spot trending topics and assign relevant angles that fit the unique Ranker format.
  • Strong understanding of Facebook audience development.
  • Develop and manage both long- and short-term editorial plans, meeting audience development goals while sharpening a strong editorial voice.
  • Effective management skills, helping oversee and direct a team of young, creative professionals.
  • Build and manage relationships with networks, studios, publicists, and entertainment content creators.
  • Creative ability to explore and find success in new distribution avenues.
  • Ability to build and maintain systems that expand both the breadth and depth of Ranker content.
  • Ability to identify problems and swiftly create effective solutions, then implement with minimal friction.
  • Ability to work in the fast-paced, output driven environment of a socially forward, data-driven digital publisher.
  • SEO experience preferred.

Who will succeed in this role?
We want you to be a successful and productive contributor to Ranker's voice and brand. Qualified candidates will need:

  • 4+ years experience in feature editing in entertainment, celebrity, movies, or television (gaming, music, and/or sports editing are a nice plus).
  • Minimum 2 years of full time experience in digital media.
  • Familiarity with the ins and outs of Facebook for businesses.
  • Demonstrated track record in content development.
  • Excellent copywriting, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Great industry contacts and a passion for pop culture.
  • Writing for short-form video and hosting experience a plus.
  • Photo editing, web analytics, content management systems, and social publishing know-how.
  • Love working in fast-moving, high-growth companies in an industry that changes rapidly.
  • Creative problem solver and effective communicator, able to make actionable, informed decisions and communicate relevant info to staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Film, etc.
