Associate Editor, Total Nerd

We are currently looking for an expert in all things nerdy to join our Content Team as an Associate Editor. This is a great opportunity to edit smart, fun articles on deeply nerdy topics every day for a leading entertainment website, which also happens to be in the Top 30 of all websites in the United States. Don't take our word for it, check it out at

This position will be focused on our Total Nerd brand:

Despite generating massive amounts of traffic, we work with a small, talented team of 20 editors and about 100 freelance writers who love creating fun, interesting content every day. We built up our traffic the right way, by creating lists and stories that people love reading and sharing steadily over the past 6 years. Here are some examples of lists we create:

The Deepest Rick And Morty Philosophy Quotes

Things Tolkien Purists Hate About The Lord Of The Rings Movies

TV Shows and Movies with the Best Use of Airlocks

A Timeline Of The Convoluted Legend Of Zelda Timeline

Weirdly Specific Parts Of American Pop Culture That Are Insanely Popular In Foreign Countries

All our successful Associate Editors have been able to hit the ground running, showing initiative and passion for the editorial process. Realistically, you’ll have to have:

  • At least 1 year of commercial editing experience, ideally for a fast-paced, content-driven website, responsible for generating several articles a day specific to nerdy entertainment topics (comics, sci-fi, video games, etc.).
  • Demonstrated and deep knowledge in all things nerdy: we might quiz you on anything from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to Shadowrun to what you think happened with the G4 television network to how you might calculate the weight of a sandworm from Dune.
  • Proven research skills and an in-depth knowledge of how to find interesting, new ideas and threads that can be turned into engaging Ranker lists, going beyond rehashing lists that exist elsewhere on the internet.
  • Experience assigning and managing assignments, especially with multiple freelance writers.
  • Image skills - picking great images for lists, cropping, etc. Creative Photoshop skills a plus.
  • We are ONLY considering those who are currently based in Los Angeles - this is an in-office position and a high-touch content editing role. We will not consider candidates who are not currently in the Los Angeles area.
  • Experience writing and/or editing game, film, and TV reviews a plus.

If this sounds exciting, here's what we need from you:

  • Current resume and completed application, including answers to all screening questions.
  • At least 3 writing and/or editorial samples that you’re proud of, as well as (if applicable) links to any social media properties you've helped program (you can put these links in your portfolio, or include them in your cover letter). All MUST be related to nerdy topics.
  • A cover letter giving color/examples of how you meet and exceed the qualifications listed above. And yes, we are looking at your cover letter to get an idea of your writing style and nerd cred. So smart, thoughtful, and clever letters really stand out.
